Kernow Old Vehicle Club (K.O.V.C) Rally Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th July 2024

Thursday evening myself, Adam and Chris took our campers and caravans up so we could get a decent pitch. We also roped off a pitch for Glen who was joining us Saturday morning. So, Friday evening after work we made our way to Penhallow with our cars. I felt sorry for Chris who followed me in my Cortina 1200, as you know it’s not a speed machine (although I can break the new 20mph limits!) We were soon joined by Adam and after settling in, we had a wander around. There were many familiar faces and lots of campers. Friday entertainment was a film show, so after a few beers we turned in for the night.

Saturday morning Chris cooked a superb breakfast and once we had washed up, it was time to make our way to our allotted area. Members started to arrive and we soon had 16 cars on our stand. With the weather behaving the field was soon filling up with a wide variety of cars, including many Fords. We managed to recruit another member with a very clean Mk5 Escort Ghia – welcome Mark.

New member, Mark, with his Mk5 Escort.

The day was spent looking around, bumping into friends and eating ice cream (thank you Ray). Around 3.30pm all cars were invited in the ring to parade around and speak to commentator Brian. Most of our club took part and after that most members headed home, while members who were camping were hoping to chill out, until a call from Brian. We were summoned to take part in a tug of war against a HGV Tractor Unit. Around 20 people picked up the rope and managed to pull the unit 1-0,  2nd pull (we think the handbrake was on) 1 – 1, 3rd pull we managed to pull the unit again – a bit of fun which makes this a great show. Saturday evening entertainment was Reservoir Stogs – they were brilliant! During the break, Health and Safety officer, John Wye, became the auctioneer. As at our show, myself, Adam, Chris and Glen spent a bit too much – but hey it was all for the Precious Lives Charity. The night was finished off with a walk around the stationary engines light show and an alcoholic night cap.

Sunday morning after another healthy breakfast from AJ’s it was time to park the cars ready for Sundays show. As more members started arriving, we had a total of 18 cars on our stand. The weather was overcast and overall, there weren’t as many cars. Again, we spent the day chatting and meeting many friends. Myself and Keith went to watch the motorcycle display. There were some lovely British bikes, and quite a few youngsters riding smaller bikes, which was great to see. Again around 3.30pm the cars were invited in the ring for a final parade, so we all took part. After the raffle and awards it was time to head home for the Euros. Many thanks to Zoe and all her team for a great weekend!

Until next time,

Mark
